Rate Parity

Definition

Rate parity is the contractual commitment that the same room, on the same dates, with the same conditions, carries the same public rate on every channel including the hotel's own website.

In practice

Most OTA agreements signed by 25–300 room Indian hotels contain some version of the clause, and the operative word in it is public. Parity restricts your published rate; it does not restrict everything.

That distinction is where the margin goes. While a hotel's public rate sits obediently level, OTAs routinely display lower effective prices through member rates giving logged-in users five to fifteen per cent off — and most users are logged in — plus app-only discounts a hotel opted into months ago, and coupon codes. The practical result for many Indian hotels is that the most expensive place to book the property is its own website.

The legitimate answer is to use fences rather than to breach the clause: closed user groups and member-only rates behind a simple sign-up wall, packages with bundled value, and corporate or repeat-guest pricing — none of which appear on public comparison screens. It is the same mechanism the OTAs use.

Why it matters to an owner

Parity is a pricing-strategy problem rather than a contract technicality. A hotel that does not know which forms of parity it actually agreed to cannot tell which levers remain open to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Parity clauses restrict public rates, so closed user groups, member-only rates, bundled packages and corporate or repeat-guest pricing can all legitimately advantage the direct channel.

Shop your own hotel weekly — incognito, logged in and on the apps — across the major OTAs, screenshot undercuts with dates and rate plans, and raise OTA-funded undercuts with your market manager in writing.

Sometimes. If an OTA persistently undercuts you, stacks programmes you never agreed to, or delivers low-value, high-cancellation business, renegotiating or exiting that specific agreement is a commercial decision.
